“I will praise you, O Lord, with all my heart; before the “gods” I will sing your praise. I will bow down towards your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.” (Psalm 138: 1-2)

I read in my Bible this note about these two verses: “Answered prayer leads to prayers of thanks. Answered prayer not only helps the person but even more exalts God.”

These two verses mention responses to God, and it mentions character traits about God.

Responses from a heart turned to God:

  1. I will praise you with all my heart
  2. I will praise you before other gods
  3. I will sing your praise
  4. I will bow down

A person whose heart is turned to God will do this because they recognise these aspects about God:

  1. His Love
  2. His faithfulness
  3. His Name
  4. His Word

One could meditate on these verses for a long time. One could go so far as to memorise these verses and have them as part of the foundation of our Christian Walk. It could become a way of being. We used to sing this song in church: “Your praise will ever be on my lips…”

During this season, as we are coming out of autumn, and before we transition to winter, let us consider God’s Love, His Faithfulness, His Name and His Word daily.
What does the Holy Spirit want us to surrender as we endeavour to become more like Jesus? What posture do we hold before God? My sincere prayer is that out of these reflections, we will praise, sing and bow down before our Father in Heaven.

Let’s pray: Father, we praise you for your unfailing love and your incomparable goodness to us. Help us to learn how to praise you with all our hearts. Help us to walk into a deeper relationship with you. Thank you for the precious Gift of Jesus Christ.
