“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
“Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.” (Matthew 14:22-33 NIV)

I have been thinking a lot about walking on water with Jesus. Not just in this season, but in previous seasons of my life when I felt God was asking me to do more than I can possibly do in my own strength.

Peter’s story in Matthew 14 stands out. The miracle began when he stepped out of the boat, not just when he walked on water. The boat meant safety; the water, risk. The other disciples saw the same things, but only Peter obeyed with courage. Fear kept the others in; faith led Peter forward.

I wonder how often we stand at the edge of something God is calling us into. Sometimes we hesitate. The challenges seem too big, or the future feels unclear, so we hold back. Maybe Jesus still says, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Peter still saw the wind and waves. For a moment, his eyes were fixed on Christ. He discovered that impossible things become possible when Jesus calls us forward.

I hear Him say again, “Take courage!”

Isaiah 50:7 says, “The Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know I shall not be put to shame.” This is a strong image of steady faith. Setting our face like flint means moving forward with resolve, trusting God to go before us and strengthen us.

What courage do we need to become a beacon on a hill, where our light is not hidden, but shining brightly to point people in the only direction that will take them Home?

As a church family, I believe God is calling us to this kind of brave faith. He is inviting us to build a Christ-centred community where everyone is welcomed, supported, and encouraged to use their gifts for God and others. To do this, let's each intentionally welcome newcomers, help one another, and find ways to serve together in our ministries and community. This vision is bigger than any one of us, so we all need to step out together. We trust Jesus will meet us in the hardest places.

Imagine if we truly believed God could use our church as a light. Our church could be a place where Christ’s light shines, tired people find hope, and the hurting find healing. Here, anyone searching for meaning could find their way home through Jesus.

Becoming this kind of community takes courage. Courage means praying boldly, serving others, welcoming people different from us, and giving generously. It means leading, showing compassion, and joining God’s mission. To make this real, let's each commit to one bold prayer, one act of service, welcoming someone new, and giving generously this week. Trust God, even when you have little or face uncertainty.

The wonderful truth is, we do not walk on water alone. Jesus is there above the storm, calling us to Him. Our part is to say yes, step out, and trust He is faithful.

Let June 2026 be a time we remember for choosing to act with courage over comfort, to trust in faith over fear, and to respond in obedience rather than hesitate. Let us commit to listening for Jesus' call to “Come,” and take intentional steps forward toward Him.
