“A time to keep silence and a time to speak.” — Ecclesiastes 3:7b
A few years ago, I found myself in a challenging situation. Rumours were flying, accusations were made, and I had every reason to defend myself.
But instead, I chose silence.
Not out of fear. To be honest, maybe not even out of submission. I would like to think out of wisdom. There is a time to speak and there is a time to be silent. Silence is not always a sign of weakness. It is often a sign of wisdom.
I listened. I observed. I kept my eyes open. I prayed.
Because here is the truth:
Sometimes the best response isn’t to react. Sometimes, the best response is patience and silence – letting actions speak and knowing that the truth has a way of surfacing, no matter what.
Ecclesiastes 3:7b, “A time to keep silence and a time to speak,” is part of a poetic reflection by King Solomon on the rhythms of life. This passage emphasizes the importance of timing in our actions and words. Silence is portrayed not as a sign of weakness, but as a deliberate choice that can reflect wisdom, humility, and trust in God's timing.
Jesus: Our Model of Discernment
Throughout His life, Jesus exemplified the balance between silence and speech. During His trial before Pilate, He chose to remain silent in the face of false accusations, fulfilling prophecy and demonstrating restraint. Yet, He also spoke boldly when teaching and confronting injustice, as seen in His interactions with the Pharisees.
This balance highlights the importance of discerning when to speak and when to remain silent, aligning our actions with God's will and timing.
REMEMBER: Silence is not a passive response but a powerful tool for wisdom, discernment, and spiritual growth. By understanding and embracing the appropriate times for silence and speech, we align ourselves with God's will and timing, reflecting His wisdom in our lives.
Keep the faith!
