“He said to His disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.” Matthew 9:37-38
Jesus used everyday moments to teach, talk with, and include his disciples in what was happening around them. Here, when he saw the needs of the crowd, he felt compassion.
He noticed this and told his disciples that the harvest was great.
He then noted that the number of workers is few.
After pointing out these challenges, Jesus gave a solution: pray and ask God to send more workers.
When we face situations like this, we might react differently than Jesus did. Like the disciples, we might think the task is too big or unexpected. We might even want to send people away, which many would understand. Sometimes, we feel tired or think we do not have enough energy or compassion to keep going.
Jesus often responded in ways people did not expect. As we celebrate Mission Sunday (3 May), let’s remember that Jesus never turned away from the harvest or from people in need. He was always full of compassion. We are called to be like a beacon on a hill and a well that gives living water. What might this look like for us?
Mission is not the same as missions. Missions are specific activities and projects to serve others, often with set goals or locations. Mission, however, is a way of life. It means doing what God has called us to do every day. At HCC, we are thankful for our local and global missionaries. But every follower of Jesus is invited to join God’s mission. Take your first step now and live out your calling with us today.
You might wonder how to know what God is calling you to do each day. Jesus said, "Pray…"
But how do we pray for guidance? Start by asking God to open your heart and mind to his leading. Take time to be still, listen, and notice how God might be speaking to you through Scripture, gentle nudges, or the wisdom of others.
Here is a simple prayer you can use:
"Lord of the harvest, please show me where you are calling me to serve today. Give me eyes to see the needs around me and the courage to respond. Help me to listen and follow Your direction. Amen."
As you pray and listen, trust that God will guide you, sometimes in small ways and sometimes in bigger ones. Invite him into your choices and believe that he will answer.
Kia kaha!
